Market Characterisation

The International Space market can be broadly divided into military and civil programs. The larger space programs tend to be the telecommunications programs, often geostationary, whereas the remote sensing and scientific programs are often of lower value.

Europe's industry is present in all areas of space activity, from launcher development and production, to observation and communications satellites as well as scientific probes, spacecraft and equipment. The industry employs around 30,000 people in 15 European countries with a turnover of around 5 Billion Euro.  The key applications, both for civil and military use, are

communications (data, media, voice)
earth observation (weather, environment, surveillance, etc)

In the field of launchers, Europe enjoys world leadership with Arianespace, the leader of the commercial launch market. In spacecraft development and production the European space industry enjoys a strong position in satellites for commercial and scientific purposes. Astrium and Alcatel are major space manufacturers able to compete and win contracts against their US counterparts France remains the major European player in the space arena, with Germany and Italy in second and third place.

The two major areas of growth in recent years have been telecommunications and launchers. Earth Observation is not yet a commercially mature market despite the potentially vast domains of applications (from meteorology to mapping, environment control etc.).  The scientific domains of activity: science, microgravity and human spaceflight, are largely funded by public budgets.
